#HousingHeroes

Daft is helping to connect doctors and nurses working on the frontline in Irish hospitals with free places to stay during the Covid-19 crisis.

Are you a doctor or nurse looking for accommodation?

If you are a registered doctor or nurse working in Irish hospitals you can now apply for free accommodation. Daft is partnering with large companies to source suitable accommodation as many of their staff have left Ireland leaving their housing empty. They are now offering them for free to doctors and nurses working in Irish hospitals. We have also opened this up to other property owners across the country so that we can source as many temporary homes as possible. You can send an enquiry directly on the ad details page on our desktop or mobile site (not yet available on apps).

This is a new project and we hope to extend to all healthcare heroes in other hospital roles soon so please stay tuned for that.

More information about this project

Our doctors and nurses are on the frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic and they need our help! The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) and HSE have asked medical staff to no longer share accommodation to limit any potential spread of the virus. This means they are in urgent need of safe and secure housing so they can continue to do the critical work for us all.

Over the last few weeks many people have left the city in order to self-isolate in other counties and countries leaving numerous empty homes across the country. Daft has reached out to many companies and are asking them to identify any employees that are willing to temporarily donate their empty accommodation to our healthcare heroes. We are are also asking anyone with an empty property to please contact us so we can help you offer it on Daft.ie. We know that there are many roles that are critical to run a hospital but as this is a new project it is at first limited to doctors and nurses. We hope to extend this service to all our healthcare heroes as soon as possible. If you would like to know more about this please contact us with the form below.

What is the #HousingHeroes project?

Our doctors and nurses are on the frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic and they need our help! Healthcare workers make up 1 in 4 Covid-19 cases in Ireland and they are now in desperate need for accommodation as they are trying to isolate themselves outside of hospitals to protect their loved ones and reduce the risk of infection. Furthermore the HSE and the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) have asked medical staff to no longer share accommodation meaning they are in urgent need of safe and secure housing so they can continue to fight for all of us.Since mid-March many people have left the city in order to self-isolate in other counties and countries leaving behind a large number of empty properties in our cities. Daft has reached out to many large companies to identify if they had any employees that are willing to temporarily donate their empty accommodation to our healthcare heroes.

How can I help?

If you have an empty property in Ireland then please add it on Doctors & Nurses section of www.daft.ie so that they can avail of it. Otherwise please share the message to your family and friends so that we can get as many of our Heroes housed as possible

Who can offer free accommodation to doctors and nurses?

Anyone who has a high quality, empty property can take part in this project. The demand for such places is huge right now so the more that we can get the better we can ensure that our doctors and nurses are safe while off duty.

How much does it cost to list an ad on Daft.ie

It is absolutely free to list an ad for our healthcare heroes. All you need is the link that was sent to your company that will allow you to place the ad. See the graph at the bottom for more details.

I have no pictures of my apartment. What can I do?

If you can access your property to take photos please do. Otherwise, it would be helpful to describe your home well. It’s likely that under these circumstances the Hero will understand this.

How can I verify my guest?

Doctors will have to submit their Medical Council Registration Number and nurses will be asked to submit their NMBI Pin. These can then be verified on https://www.medicalcouncil.ie/public-information/check-the-register/ and https://www.nmbi.ie/Check-the-Register respectively.

Do I need to tell my landlord about me housing a Hero?

This is up to you. However we do recommend informing your landlord.

How long will the Hero stay in my home?

We recommend a minimum period of 14 days, however if longer was possible it would likely be highly valued by the Heroes. We suggest that you arrange this with your Hero directly once you are in touch.

What happens if I have to return to Dublin on short notice?

We suggest staying in contact with your Hero and letting them know at first contact that you reserve the right to come back to your home with a short notice of 2-3 days.

How do I give the Hero a key to my home?

We suggest speaking with your Hero and seeing what works best for both of you. If your key is not in the country or it is not possible to meet the Hero in person, we recommend sending via postal service to the hospital where they work. To make sure it gets to its destination quickly registered mail may be the best option here.

Who will cover the rent during this time?

The mission of the Housing Heroes project is for us to give back to our healthcare workers who are sacrificing for us each day. Therefore we ask any host to offer their homes for free to our doctors and nurses.

Will the Hero pay for bills (Wifi, electricity, gas, water)?

The mission of the Housing Heroes project is for us to give back to our healthcare workers who are sacrificing for us each day. Therefore we ask any host to offer their homes for free to our doctors and nurses. However if your Hero is staying for a long period of time we suggest discussing possibly splitting costs with them.

Will my home be cleaned once the Hero has left my home?

We strongly recommend you to discuss and arrange this with your Hero and to include this into your contractual agreement if you choose to create one (including who will arrange & pay for cleaning).

What happens if the Hero damages something in my apartment?

We recommend that you reach out to your insurance provider to find out how this short-term informal arrangement will work best for you. Liberty Insurance have offered Heroes free contents insurance to cover their stay. This also includes damages that may occur to the property. We recommend asking your Hero to avail of this offer by emailing mibistaff@libertyinsurance.ie. You can also arrange for damages to be included in the contractual agreement with your Hero.

Who can I reach out to in case I have any other questions?

Please email us at housingheroes@daft.ie if you have any more questions.

Can I create a contract between me and my Hero?

Yes you can. Daft has partnered with Swiftcourt to provide free digital agreements which are legally compliant and easy for both parties to fill out while we are social distancing: https://swiftcourt.com/en/contracts/daft/letting-agreement-housing-heroes

What kind of properties do the Heroes need?

Nurses and doctors across the country are in need of safe accommodation right now. They need access to an entire property that adheres to high cleanliness and safety standards so they can self-isolate effectively. Please email us if you are unsure if your property would be appropriate.
